Rahul Menon had it all going for him. An MBA degree and a summer internship at a leading multinational was just the right profile for that coveted job. With a number of candidates vying for the post with similar profiles, Rahul knew he had to break through the clutter.

After drafting an impressive resume, he found his answer in a “cover letter” to the HR. A quick round of interviews followed, landing himself the job within a week. Rahul learnt a cover letter had the power to make that first impression.

Cover letter provides a snapshot of an individual

Radhika Shah, Associate Creative Director, Velocity Brand Server believes, “A lot of youngsters are enthusiastic but lack the support material that could make them strong candidates. This is where a cover letter can do just the trick.”

Sumaiya Khan, an HR professional with a leading multinational agency mentions, “A cover letter gives the HR a snapshot of an individual in a nutshell. With an increasing number of resumes hitting the inbox of an HR professional, a cover letter can play a critical role. It is an integral part of the decision making process while short listing the right candidates for an interview”.

Hence, while your resume may be the most significant part of your application, a cover letter must have the ability to encourage the recruiter to read it.

It must complement your CV, while presenting your profile in a crisp and distinct manner, importantly, relevant to the company’s requirements. Having said this, the list of don’ts outweighs the dos!

One of the basic thumb rules of writing a cover letter would be addressing it to the correct person. “Many a times, you have a cover letter addressed to ‘A’ person and sent to ‘B’ person. That reflects an attitude of neglect, reducing your chances of selection” feels Sumaiya.

“Also it important to mention possible and correct contact details in the cover letter, as after, all that one call/e-mail can change your life!”
