| They say, "If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always gotten." So why do we repeat things that we know aren't working? Take jobseekers who send out hundreds, sometimes thousands of resumes, and never get any results. In any other context this would merit a change in approach, but they just keep sending out more resumes. This tough job market makes it even more important to stop the mindless application-mailing and analyze what isn't working — because the problem might be devastatingly simple. Last year, I was visited by one of these chronic resume-senders. Sheryl had sent out 1,000 resumes in ten months and didn't have one interview to show for it. She brought a copy of her resume with her, and we examined it. There, in the middle of the page, in bold, 14-point type, we read: PROFFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE She had never noticed the spelling error, but undoubtedly the hiring managers on the receiving end of the resume had. Mortifying as this discovery was, Sheryl did the right thing. She addressed the fact that something was wrong, and with careful analysis (and outside help) discovered exactly what that was.
