About Assessments
Benefits of using assessments in fresher and lateral hiring A scientifically designed assessment serves the purpose of standardising evaluation of talent across various competencies that are critical to forecast on-job performance and fitment of a potential recruit. Benefits of an online assessment With the ever increasing penetration of internet and computers across homes and educational institutions; carrying loads of question papers across the country, conducting a paper based test and then spending hours in checking the answer scripts, entering data into excel file, announcing results and then bringing all answer scripts and question papers back appears to be an anachronism today. An online assessment provides the benefit of - Time saving (huge opportunity cost), a process which would otherwise run into 2 days now can be finished within 8 hours
- Allows lesser number of panels to travel (saves the ever soaring airfares)
- Allows access to modern techniques of randomization of question papers (minimising unfair practices) to an organisation
- Monitoring and troubleshooting can be done online from any part of the country
- Question paper cannot be leaked - no more sleepless nights while carrying them across the country
- Automatic digitization of the entire test process- no manual tinkering allowed - a breeze through during annual audits
- Automated and detailed analytics of tests, students and institutes - choose your test and institutes based on data rather than rankings
| Key facts and figures about CoCubes Assessments- More than 15 lakh assessments in the last 1 year

General competencies corporates look for and methods used by CoCubes to assess those
Some of the competencies the employers intend to look at, while hiring are:
- Ability to understand or visualize any real time Problem
- Systematic or Sequential approach towards problem Solving
- Ability to Analyze
- Ability to deal with numbers
- Ability to transform conceptual models into real time systems
- Verbal and Written Communication Skills
- Domain specific and technical skills
- Personality profile of the candidate to evaluate potential fit
Each of these competencies is measured by different assessment mechanisms. A typical assessment mechanism mapping for measuring desired competencies is shown below:
| Competency Measured | Assessment Mechanism |
| Systematic approach, Ability to visualize a problem | Flowcharting and Visual Algorithms |
| Creativity, Ability to analyze any problem | Analytical Reasoning |
| Problem solving approach in limited time, Ability to deal with numbers | Quantitative reasoning |
| Verbal and written communication skills | English Usage |
| Transform conceptual models into real time systems | Computer Mathematical Modeling |
| Domain specific skills and understanding of fundamentals | Engineering/Domain specific tests |
| Personality analysis and job fitment | Psychometric profiling |
What is a good assessment?
| A good test should be able to accurately measure the desired skills of a candidate with long term and inter-sample repeatability. | |
Validity of an assessment means the ability of a test to accurately measure the competencies required for a particular job. The best test to measure how to coach a football team would be irrelevant if the job in question is of a bus driver.
Reliability on the other hand refers to the repeatability of the correct measurement by the test. A test score distribution should not drastically change if the same or similar candidates take a similar test again and again.
A good assessment needs to be both valid and reliable
Measurement of reliability and validity
Validity can be ensured by careful understanding of job competencies required for a particular job and then meticulously designing a test matrix for the same.
Reliability of a test can be statistically measured and academicians and devised standard and objective metrics for checking and reporting of the same.
Cronbach's alpha is a statistic generally used as a measure of internal consistency or reliability of test scores. A high value shows high inter-correlations amongst test items and a value of more than 0.7 indicates a reliable test
CoCubes assessments are reliable and valid
- Our tests have Cronbach Alpha or KR 20 levels of >0.7, indicating strong reliability in test scores.
- Most of the clients have been able to use a standard cut-off for across events indicating reliability of test scores throughout geographies
- A 9 step closed loop process is used to develop assessment content for corporate based on needs to assess specific competencies - thus ensuring validity of the tests

Psychometric profiling of candidates is done using a variation of the contemporary and most widely used five-factor model of personality, also commonly known as the "Big Five" model. The Big Five factors are:
- Openness (inventive/curious vs. consistent/cautious)
- Conscientiousness (efficient/organized vs. easy-going/careless)
- Extraversion (outgoing/energetic vs. solitary/reserved)
- Agreeableness (friendly/compassionate vs. cold/unkind)
- Emotional Stability (sensitive/nervous vs. secure/confident)
These five overarching domains have been found to contain and subsume most known personality traits and are assumed to represent the basic structure behind all personality traits
Measured correctly, these traits can effectively predict post selection job behavior of candidates in real world scenarios. Various job profiles require varying personalities and using the personality map of an individual, it is possible to forecast if an academically or technically suitable candidate can thrive and succeed in a particular role given his/her personality type.
Examples of usage of personality maps including checking for sales team to be high on extraversion, R & D team to be high on openness while the customer service team should be high on agreeableness.

An automated tool to evaluate programming skills in a simulated environment can accurately segregate good programmer vis-à-vis other. Our Error Detection Technology (EDT) simulates an interview like experience which enables the engine to check both algorithm and actual programming skills of a candidate. In our platform the candidate develops and writes the program in an editor; compiles and runs test cases, and the administrator gets an automated score for every candidate for multiple parameters. The evaluator supports multiple programming languages such as C, C++, Java, C# and has the flexibility of taking questions from client question bank as input also. Using error detection methodology, CoCubes programming evaluator leads to better segregation of test takers.
While hiring for technical roles, it is imperative for organisations to test a candidate's skills, knowledge and understanding of the core technical concepts. Domain specific assessment tests are designed to assess a candidate's grasp on fundamentals (theoretical knowledge) and understanding of applications of those core concepts in the branch of engineering specialisation.
A technical test is ideally used in conjugation with an aptitude test (designed according to the job profile). When used in such a combination, a candidate's technical knowledge as well as learning ability, command over language, problem solving skills and basic aptitude are tested, leading to a holistic measurement of candidate's fitment with the job role.
A good score in this test is an indication that:- Candidate has a sound knowledge of the basic concepts (theory as well as applications)
- Candidate is trainable (owing to good score in aptitude test)
- Candidate should be able to easily absorb the technical training provided
Domain Specific Solutions :
Industry Specific Solutions :
While hiring candidates with experience, it is critical to measure the skills that are required to be demonstrated by the candidate in everyday functioning. These skills are generally different from the ones that are needed to be demonstrated by a fresher. CoCubes question bank covers all aspects of Aptitude and Technical Testing (Domain specific) for a candidate. The test batteries are available for various difficulty levels and can be used for all experience levels. When evaluating lateral candidates, the assessments are generally customized to a much larger degree to respond to the exact specifications of the job profile.

Validity 1 and Reliability
The test is valid with an r
2 of 91% at a sample size of >30000 score points. The probability of student getting an offer increases 10 times as his score increases by 1.75 times. The test has a Cronbach Alpha of more than 0.7 which shows its reliability.
1 For a test to be valid, a positive relationship between scores of shortlisted students and probability of getting an offer should exist. This shows that skills measurement via test is in line with skills measured by the interviewer. Higher the value of r-square, higher is the relationship and stronger is the test validity.

Based on our experience of working with multiple organisations and job profiles, we have identified a range of scores that generally lead to a higher selection from the pool of candidates. Each corporate's job profile is classified in one of the 8 job profiles and only candidates who meet the basis threshold of scores are eligible to apply. This ensures that overall quality of candidates who appear for the interviews remain high.
